Talar's Idea

Talar Keshishian
Aleppo, Syria

Last year, I remember going to the airport with intentions to welcome my dad and I noticed a group of people waiting for someone, and I found it really interesting that they were speaking in different languages. As I approached them, I noticed that one of them was speaking in the Western Armenian dialect, and I my own curiosity led me to ask them where they were from. It wasn’t until then that I realized I was speaking to Sevan, as he was waiting for their 1000th Birthright Armenia Volunteer. After our conversation, I had some time to consider applying to the organization. My desire to volunteer for Birthright Armenia was because of its diversity and  I appreciated how every volunteer has the chance to offer a different perspective. As I began my volunteerism, one of the very first things that I noticed was the hospitality of the Armenian people. At first, I was considering volunteering for only two months, but the more that I got involved, the more I felt a connection, which led me to extend my volunteerism to a full year. The decision to extend was not an easy one, especially since I didn’t  have very much work experience or skills, but the program allowed me to self explore and expanded my horizons. I am currently working with children, as I am translating documents.  I am continuing to grow and learn about different cultures which help me gain a better understanding of the Diaspora. I am extremely content with my decision to extend my stay as a volunteer, as I know that it is a very special organization. Now that I have work experience, my thoughts have really shifted and grown towards different cultures. In addition, I am continuing to improve my language and writing skills. Birthright Armenia has helped me gain many friendships from across the world. Lastly, if I were to give advice to others is, it would be to apply for Birthright Armenia, as it has been  the best decision for me. Without this organization, I would not have had the opportunity to  learn a language, discover new places, gain friendships, and lastly,  to be a part of the Birthright Family.
