A Scientific and Technical Journey of Self-Discovery

4 min read

As someone born and raised outside Armenia and visiting the country periodically during my childhood, I had a connection with Armenia, but it wasn't strong enough. However, I had a goal — to contribute to the development of Armenia. So, when I got the opportunity to participate in the Birthright Armenia program, I decided to use it.

ARRIVAL IN ARMENIA

After graduating from Moscow University with a Master's degree in Materials Science, I immediately bought a ticket to Armenia, arriving in Yerevan the next day. I decided to do this because I realized I had to start my career in Armenia to help my country and its people. I spent the first month away from my family and friends looking for a job, but none of the options completely aligned with my professional needs. Luckily, I heard about the Birthright Armenia program from a friend, which seemed like a great opportunity for both personal and professional growth, as well as for immersing myself in Armenian culture and society.

VECTOR OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARMENIA

I aimed to contribute to Armenia's development by investing my efforts in the growth of its scientific and technological industries, which would, in turn, positively impact the country's economy and foster closer cooperation with other countries. This would improve the standard of living for every Armenian citizen.

As the director of my internship site mentioned, “If every entrepreneur comes to Armenia and establishes a business, our country will greatly benefit.” This is already happening: many scientific and technical companies founded by Diasporan Armenians have moved to Armenia, with many scientists and specialists with international experience choosing to work at local universities. These developments are inspiring because they create new opportunities for both the Diaspora and the people in Armenia, contributing to the country's economic growth, education, and interest in science.

MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Thanks to my varied experience—from developing materials for aircraft engines to working in a medical startup—the Birthright Armenia program quickly found an internship site that suited my professional needs. My first internship was at Foldink, a young biomedical company focused on 3D bioprinting of artificial organs. I was involved in setting bioprinter parameters and reporting on the properties of biomaterials synthesized in various ways.

My second internship was at AIP scientific, a medical technology company working on methods for creating bone implants and direct manufacturing. Founded by Diasporan Armenians, the company had moved from Estonia to Armenia several years ago, bringing with them their experience and passion for contributing to Armenia's growth. Their activities are especially relevant now, as many refugees from Artsakh require medical assistance. Initially, I helped with the manufacturing of titanium bone implants for patients with cranial trauma. Later, I took on a new project as a volunteer, developing methods for 3D printing ceramic materials for space electronics as part of international aerospace research. Recognizing the company's large-scale projects and impressive results, I accepted a permanent position as a project manager two months later. I was delighted with this opportunity, which allowed me to continue exploring scientific areas I was interested in while collaborating with experienced specialists to further develop my professional skills.

THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF THE DIASPORA IN THE FUTURE OF ARMENIA

After spending almost six months in Armenia, including four months with Birthright Armenia, my desire to help my country transformed into a clear goal. As a volunteer, I not only strengthened my connection with my historical homeland, but also learned about the country's structure, its strengths, and the challenges that need to be addressed on the path to a prosperous state.

Despite the difficulties Armenia has faced, I believe it has a bright future. Witnessing how the country has changed over the past nine years thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts of Armenians from around the world, I'm glad I could contribute to the development of Armenia's scientific and technical industries. I encourage members of the Diaspora who are specialists in various fields—from science and technology to art and politics—to come here, share their experience and knowledge, and become part of the efforts to turn Armenia into a thriving and happy country.

After all, the surest way to achieve a prosperous Armenia is to take the initiative into your own hands.
