My First Weeks in Armenia: A New Adventure Full of Surprises

2 min

From France to Armenia: A New Life

Currently a third-year student at Sciences Po Aix, I decided to complete my internship in Armenia as part of my university exchange.

For the next four months, I will be interning at the Regional Center for Democracy and Security (RCDS), a geopolitical research center focusing on local elections, the Armenian government, and Caucasus geopolitics.

As an Armenian and a social sciences student, it was important for me to intern specifically at RCDS in order to deepen my knowledge of Armenia in the context of my future Master’s thesis.

My internship involves conducting research on specific topics — recently, the main focus has been the hatred faced by Nagorno-Karabakh refugees in Armenia after their forced displacement. I also edit interview videos given by my supervisor, which are later shared on social media.

Birthright Armenia: Friends, Networking, and Unforgettable Moments

Thanks to an alumnus of the Armenian Volunteer Corps (AVC), I discovered the Birthright Armenia program, which welcomes Armenians from the diaspora and helps them find internships, housing, and offers a variety of activities such as hikes, Armenian language classes, and traditional dance lessons.

I decided to apply, and I am truly delighted by the experience. The members of the organization make sure everyone feels included, and people come from all over the world. This is my first extended stay in Armenia, and without Birthright it would have been difficult to meet people my age and rediscover Armenia from a different perspective — not just for vacation, but by being useful while having fun.

Today, Armenians are scattered across the globe, and it’s sometimes difficult to create lasting connections with Armenians abroad. Birthright gives us that opportunity, bringing us together despite our differences, so that we can get to know one another. Personally, I’ve met many Armenians from France.

I highly recommend contacting Birthright to be part of this adventure — to discover your roots, Armenia, its monuments, nature, and hospitality. Birthright will help you build a network and enjoy an amazing stay in one of the world’s oldest countries, with a rich and radiant culture that we are proud to carry forward.
