“I am looking for something out of the mainstream”

4 min read

“I am looking for something out of the mainstream.” This is what we often receive from people who think about becoming a volunteer or intern in Armenia. Our answer is always “we can arrange that for you,” because among our partner organizations, we have many new initiatives and startups that work on quite unique concepts. Below are four newly recruited partners ready to host a Birthright Armenia volunteer and engage them in their everyday projects.

See with Hands: Massage Therapy in Armenia

Seeing Hands (տեսնող ձեռքեր) provides one of the most unique services in Armenia. Massages by blind therapists are what one can expect entering into their building. Blind masseuses focus all their energy and concentration on their hands helping clients relieve physical and psychological stress. Since the masseuses are professionals, they attend training sessions every once in a while to upgrade their skills and keep up with the outgrowing trends in their field of specialization. Since many of our volunteers are also professionals with experience and education acquired in international environments, we had our very first volunteer placement at this site. Matthew Mardiryan from Australia is specialized in Remedial Massage and has worked as a Remedial Massage Therapist in Australia. Matthew will conduct training for the masseuses working at Seeing Hands to share his expertise with them. The center is also looking for individuals specialized in Marketing and Social Media; so, if you or someone you know might be interested in joining this unique initiative as a volunteer, this is the right time to apply and come through our program.

Dive into the World of Arts in Armenia

Another trend that we observe among our partners all over Armenia is that more and more organizations have begun to focus their activities around preserving and promoting Arts in Armenia. One of such initiatives is Hay-Art Cultural Center, a platform for contemporary art that also serves as a creative hub aiming to promote contemporary art in Armenia through cultural education and international art exchanges. Seeking to align creative economies and the needs of culturally active communities, Hay-Art initiates and implements a wide array of cultural events, which require the contributions of professionals from different fields.

How do our volunteers help? Jerome Mihran Bariguian from France is a photographer, who came to Armenia five months ago and volunteered at six different volunteer sites, including youth initiative centers and artistic centers. Jerome helped the Center with photography and videography efforts. Aside from it, the Center is looking for mid-career professionals, project and event managers, as well as communication specialists focused on grant writing and fundraising.

Support the Armenian IT and Film Industry

For all our readers interested in video animation and tech startups, we are here to share with you about Musk Factor, a local startup that works on creating the first Armenian series about IT. All founding members of this initiative came all the way from Hollywood to make this idea a reality. Having the experience of working on initiatives for HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix, the team of professionals seeks to highlight the Armenian IT industry on worldwide famous streaming platforms. Now, they are looking for young enthusiasts to collaborate with.

Our volunteer Sophia Badalian from the US is very actively engaged in this startup as a Project Manager and an active Community Team Member. Besides operational and organizational tasks, Musk Factor is also looking to engage in its activities volunteers specialized in cinematography, copywriting, NFT, filmmaking and production.

Develop Armenian Products

If you have been to Armenia recently, you have definitely seen the outstanding RARE Still Spring Water bottles on the shelves of every store. Our partners at RARE came up with the concept of unique water bottles offering spring water straight from Armenian highlands, particularly from the Aknaler Mountain in the mountain range of Pampak, Kotayk Region of Armenia.

Our first volunteer to join them will arrive in March, who will help to organize the export of the bottles. The firm is ready to welcome volunteers to handle project management tasks related to administration, coordination, and general labor organization within the production.

This is just a sample list of our partners who work on unique initiatives based in Armenia and initiated by Armenians. They all are currently looking to expand their teams with the help of enthusiastic volunteers and their contributions to the success of these projects. Want to know more details? Send an email to [email protected]. Ready to come and volunteer with them (or other partners in Armenia)? Apply now and start packing your suitcase. Your skills are needed in your homeland.
