Birthright Alumni Turns Into a TV Star

3 min read

“I’ve been told my entire life that I am Armenian, but until today I still don’t know what it is that makes me Armenian. That’s why I’ve come here. I will walk from border to border, all on foot, to see everything. I’ll climb the highest mountains and descend into the lowest canyons. I want to meet people along the way and learn how they live… I have left everything behind to explore what it means to be Armenian.

In 2013, a 31-year-old Armenian from Renton, WA, Roffi Petrossian, felt the urge to find answers to this vital question and decided to discover his roots to learn more. Applying to the Birthright Armenia program, Roffi started his journey of self-discovery.He took Armenian language classes, and volunteered in five partner organizations. Back then he wouldn’t even imagine that one of them, Bars Media Documentary Film Studio, would turn into a long-term cooperation, helping Roffi to capture all of these beautiful moments.

The brainchild of that cooperation was The Road, a 24-episode project, which walks you through the magnificent Armenian Highland, showcases the untouched beauty of the land and, at the same time, helps you immerse into the daily life of Roffi’s travels. The show changes many perspectives, breaks stereotypes, and builds new bonds, by simply showing life in Armenia as it truly is. Step by step it will make you fall in love with this treasure of a country unknown to most.

The Road: Now Available in English

The Road (Janapar in Armenian) was so successful among Armenians that the H.Hovnanian Family Foundation decided to co-produce the English version of the project to make the series available to a much wider audience.

To discover Roffi's journey in English, watch the first 6 episodes on the website or Facebook Watch, and follow him on the official Instagram account. And for hiking lovers, HIKEArmenia will upload the Roffi’s entire route with GPS tracks on their website, allowing you to navigate through the same road.

Still, the definition of what it means to be Armenian differs for each of us, depending on what we wish to uncover for ourselves. This project will give you the opportunity to discover Armenia through Roffi’s eyes. What about discovering your own Armenia after watching all the episodes? Take the lead and apply to the Birthright Armenia program. We will show the path to the door of opportunity.
